Our Favorite FREE Art Supplies for Girls
DECEMBER 9TH, 2019
We recently shared a list of our Top 10 Art Supplies for Self-Expression and Exploration. But you don’t have to spend money to inspire girls and get their creative juices flowing. One of our favorite things to do is upcycle household items. This means turning things we normally think of as trash, into treasures. Below is a list of our favorite free art supplies. Put them together in a box with a couple of art challenges, for a fun and unexpected holiday gift.
And now for our faves:
Egg Cartons
Egg cartons are wonderful for crafts because their shape and texture is interesting, and they can be cut pretty easily. Plus, there are so many things you can do with them! Check Pinterest for project ideas.
Paper Towel & Toilet Rolls
Cardboard rolls have a fun shape that works well for creating art projects, and basic toys (like pretend binoculars and telescopes).
Bits of Ribbon, String, Twine or Yarn
Ever go to wrap a present and realize that you don’t quite have enough ribbon to make it around the gift? Don’t throw that last bit out! Ribbon, string, twine and yarn can be used to create doll hair, party decorations and more.
Milk Cartons, Jugs & Empty Containers
Milk cartons, jugs and empty containers (oatmeal, take-out, etc.) are fun because they make art three dimensional.
Rolls of Tape
If you’ve got a half roll of masking tape that’s been collecting dust in your junk drawer for the last two years, why not pass it along to a child?
Old Magazines, Junk Mail and Newspaper
Old magazines and junk mail are perfect for collages. Newspaper is great for wrapping or stuffing things, or protecting tables from messier projects.
Buttons and Tags
You know those tags and extra buttons that come with new pieces of clothing? Instead of tossing them, try adding them to a girl's art supply collection. Buttons make great eyes and tags work well for micro projects.
Fabric and Wrapping Paper Scraps
Fabric and wrapping paper scraps have little use to adults, but can be used by kids to create incredible things! They can make basic dolls/toys by rolling and tying fabric, or use scraps for mixed media pieces.
Cardboard Boxes
If you find yourself in possession of too much cardboard, consider sharing it with a girl. Cardboard boxes can be turned into treasure chests, cars, and even basic doll houses.
Upcycled art can be a ton of fun and the price is certainly right—free!
