Back to School Craft: Permanent Marker Tie Dye Shoes
AUGUST 6TH, 2024
Tie dye designs are re-gaining popularity this summer, and that’s sure to continue into back to school season. Instead of buying fancy sneakers at the store this year, consider having the girls in your life design their own shoes. With some Sharpies and rubbing alcohol, you can make your own tie dye sneakers just in time for back to school season.
Here’s what you’ll need:
• White canvas shoes (you can almost always find these at Walmart)
• Sharpie permanent markers
• 90% rubbing alcohol
• Pipettes or a spray bottle
• Masking tape
• Optional: paper bag or newspaper

How to make your Tie Dye Shoes:
Step 1: If your shoes have laces, unlace them and put them to the side.
Step 2: Use the tape to cover any areas of the shoes you do not want tie dyed.
Step 3: Lay newspaper or paper bags down to protect your work area if necessary.
Step 4: Use the Sharpies to color a tie dye design on the shoes.
• Keep in mind that dark colors will take over any lighter colors you use. We decided to use one dark color and use it sparingly in our design.
• We did a spiral design, but you can experiment with drawing different patterns!

Step 5: Once your drawing is complete fill your pipette or spray bottle up with the rubbing alcohol.
Step 6: Slowly drop or spray your shoes with the alcohol and watch the colors change and run together.
• Start with one area and move out from there.
• You can go back and fill in color with a sharpie if you need to.

Step 7: Peel the tape off your shoes.
Step 8: Let your shoes dry for 24 hours before wearing them!
Some shoe design ideas could be school colors, team colors, favorite color(s), a fun pattern, or traditional rainbow tie dye. These custom sneakers will be a hit during back to school season. Consider making your own pair to match the girls in your life!
