5 New Year's Resolutions Perfect for the Whole Family
December 27th, 2022
1. Try a New Sport
Fitness goals are often on top of the mind for new year’s resolutions. We love the idea of setting new active goals together as a family. From hiking and running to snowshoeing and skiing, there are many fun ways to be active as a family. We find that sports and being outside can be very empowering and are the perfect way to spend time together as a family. During the winter months, it can be challenging to find ways to be active outdoors. While there are plenty of snow sports like skiing and snowboarding, we love the simplicity of snowshoeing. It requires minimal gear and allows you to relax and explore, generally with less risk than skiing or snowboarding. Check out our outdoor adventure guide for more ideas.
2. Make a Family Bucket List
2023 is a new year filled with tons of opportunities to branch out and try new things. Make a family bucket list of fun goals to accomplish in the new year. This bucket list is filled with fun prompts to help organize your family’s hopes and wishes for the new year. Gather around the table and have fun coming up with all the new things you want to eat, play, visit, do, read, and more! Plus making goals as a family can encourage you to accomplish them- you can hold each other accountable to keep this resolution.
3. Have “Unplugged” Evenings
Shutting off your devices for an evening can lead to many benefits. Research shows that unplugging electronics at least an hour before bedtime can improve your sleep, circadian rhythm, and next morning's alertness. This new year’s resolution may be a challenge for the whole family, so start slow with one evening a week and set a goal to build upon as the year progresses.
4. Cook Together
If healthy eating is your goal, why not start cooking together? Healthier eating habits are easier to adopt if everyone is involved in the meal prep process. Kids love to cook and can often handle easy tasks like washing or cutting soft vegetables on their own (with an age-appropriate knife, of course).
The Food Network has compiled a list of fun and family friendly recipes to get you started. If you want to try this out but are pressed for time, consider purchasing meal kits and encouraging older kids to cook dinner a couple of nights a week. Meal kits generally include all of the ingredients you need and feature simple recipes that make them well-suited to older kids (with supervision as needed). Bon Appetite!
5. Start a Family Book Club
Creating healthy habits are typically what come to mind when making new year’s resolutions. Reading together is a resolution that has many benefits: it can increase vocabulary, boost imagination, and inspire a love for books. If you have young children start by reading picture books together, or maybe going to the library once a week to pick out new books together. As your kids get older, take turns picking a book that everyone reads then have a book club night to talk about your favorite characters, chapters, and themes. Here are a few of our favorite books featuring strong girls to get you started.
The new year is a great time to reevaluate your goals and set new ones for the year ahead. We hope we have inspired you to think of ways to include the whole family in the yearly tradition of creating new year’s resolutions. Happy New Year- here’s to a happy and healthy 2023.
